Local artist’s work represents school’s principles and San Antonio Latino culture

A heart. A raised fist. A sprawling tree.

These symbols make up a trio of paintings that unify cultural images and core values at KIPP University Prep High School, occupying what was once a blank wall in the library.

Last spring, co-school leader Abby Morton-Garland and co-principal Tina DeValk wanted a way to symbolize the charter school’s identity, its role in the community and what it means to the students the charter school serves. Focus groups that included students and parents narrowed the list of ideas to three character traits: the heart for love, the fist for justice and the tree for growth.
